Event Details:
Mosul, Iraq, June 2026. Al-Hadba University held a specialised workshop on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on June 21, 2026, at its campus. The workshop was titled “From Commitment to Impact… Embedding the SDGs in the Life of the University.” It brought together the university’s leadership, deans, heads of departments, and faculty members to discuss how the university can turn its commitment to the 2030 Agenda into measurable, visible achievements.
🌍 A University-Wide Commitment to the 2030 Agenda
The workshop is part of Al-Hadba University’s ongoing effort to embed sustainability in its strategy, academic programmes, research, and campus operations. It also reflects the university’s commitment to being accountable for its contribution to the 17 Global Goals, nationally and internationally.
🎯 How AHU Can Achieve the SDGs
The opening session reviewed the 17 SDGs and their targets and examined where the university’s core missions can make the greatest impact: teaching, research, community engagement, and campus stewardship. Participants discussed the role of the university’s SDG Council in coordinating efforts across colleges. They also discussed the need for clear institutional policies and the importance of documenting evidence of SDG-related activity so that it can be reported to international frameworks such as the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings.
📚 Reflecting the SDGs in Curriculum Design
The second session focused on curriculum design. It explored practical ways to map programme and module learning outcomes to relevant SDGs. Other topics included integrating sustainability themes into course content, case studies, and graduation projects, and making each programme’s SDG contribution explicit in its module descriptors and programme specifications. Faculty members exchanged examples from their own disciplines, showing that every field, from health sciences to engineering, law, and business, has a meaningful role to play.
🔬 Linking Research and Publications to the SDGs
The discussion then turned to scholarly output. Participants looked at how research and publications can be aligned with, and clearly mapped to, specific SDGs. They also covered how bibliometric databases such as Scopus classify SDG-related research, and why researchers should highlight the sustainability relevance of their work. Faculty members were encouraged to pursue interdisciplinary and community-focused research that addresses local and regional challenges in Nineveh and across Iraq.
🎓 Raising Student Awareness of the SDGs
A dedicated session examined how the university can make students active partners in sustainable development. Proposals included:
- awareness campaigns and SDG-themed events
- student clubs and volunteering initiatives
- incorporating SDG topics into orientation activities and extracurricular programmes
- encouraging students to pursue graduation projects that address real sustainability challenges
The aim is for every graduate of Al-Hadba University to leave as an informed and responsible global citizen.
🤝 Discussion and Recommendations
The workshop concluded with an open discussion in which participants shared ideas and proposed practical next steps. These included:
- forming SDG focal points within each college
- building a unified record of the university’s SDG-related activities
- strengthening the presence of SDG achievements on the university’s dedicated SDG platform
🚀 Commitment to a Sustainable Future
